IPS Exam Detail

The Indian Police Service examination is a part of the Civil Services Examination (CSE) which is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) each year. UPSC i.e. union public service commission conducts IPS exam every year. This exam is one of the CSE i.e. civil services examinations.

IPS Departments

For better, efficient and systematic work IPS is divided in many departments. These departments are as follows-

  • Criminal Investigation Department (CID)
  • Crime Branch
  • Traffic Bureau
  • Home Guards

    UPSC conducts various exams every year for the various government and defence departments. One of them is the IPS exam. Every year lakhs of candidates apply for IPS exam.

    There are three stages of exams. First is the preliminary exam. After clearing this they go for the main examination and after clearing the main exam they are called for personality test. The selection process for IPS starts in June and ends in April. Merit list is released in the month of May. This is a national level exam and
    candidates have to give the offline exam.  This exam is taken for 24 services and candidates are given the chance of 6 attempts to clear the exam. Though lakhs of students apply for IPS exam only 800 approx vaccines are out.

    Eligibility Criteria for IPS Exam

  • For males Minimum Height  is 165cm and for Women 150cm but some relaxation is given to ST and others like Garhwalias, Gorkhas, Kumaonis, Assamese etc.
  • Chest girth for male and female is 84 cm and 79 cm. In other categories, chest girth for a male is 160 cm and for a female its 145 cm.
  • The candidates with the issue of squint are disqualified.
  • Candidates with specs are allowed.
  • Distance vision for better eye 6/6 or 6/9.
  • Distance vision for worst eye 6/12 or 6/9.
  • Near vision J1 and J2.
  • High-grade colour vision.
  • Binocular vision is required.
  • Nationality Eligibility

    Candidate should be Citizen of India.

    Age limit for IPS exam

    For general categories, the minimum age is 21 years and the maximum is 32 years. Some relaxation is given to other categories. For SC/ ST 5 years relaxation is given. For OBC 3 year’s relaxation, for disabled during defence
    services 3 years relaxation is given and for ex-serviceman, 5 years relaxation is given.

    Educational Qualifications for IPS exam

    The aspirant should be graduate from a recognized university.

    Salary for IPS

    IPS officers get 56100 rs monthly in the beginning. This increases with the officer rank. As per the post it varies, for example, Director-General of Police get 2,25,000.00 INR per month, Additional Director General of Police get 2,05,400.00 INR, Inspector-General of Police get 1,44,200.00 INR, Deputy Inspector General of Police get 1,31,100.00 INR, Senior Superintendent of Police get 78,800.00 INR, Additional Superintendent of Police get 67,700.00 INR and Deputy Superintendent of Police gets 56,100.00 INR.

    Duties of IPS Officer

  • IPS officer duty is to safeguard central and state public. They are responsible for maintaining peace in public.
  • They maintain law and order.
  • They work to detect criminals and prevent crime.
  • They are responsible for catching people behind drug smuggling.
  • They work on accident prevention.
  • The most important role is command and lead RAW, CBI, CID and IB. RAW i.e. Research and Analysis Wing, CBI i.e. Central Bureau of Investigation, CID i.e. Criminal Investigation Department and IB i.e. Intelligence Bureau are leaded by them.
  • They also lead and command armed and civil police forces, Indian Federal Law Enforcement Agencies in union territories and state.
  • IPS officers are given duty on borders too.
  • They provide VIP security.
  • They are responsible for railway policing and border policing too.
  • They also work for counter-terrorism.
  • They work to prevent corruption and economic offences.
  • They also command and lead CAPF Central Armed Police Forces, CPO Central Police Organizations and Indian Federal Law Enforcement Agencies.
